As the legislature considers its options for the long-term funding of MassDOT’s transit division, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), it would be wise to consider the history of funding for transit. The history of transit funding holds many valuable lessons for the legislature to consider. Moreover, national trends in transportation funding reveal a future of transit funding significantly different than the world as we have known it.
